This was a two-part job in Cottage Grove - a full driveway replacement out front and a brand new concrete patio out back to tie in with a deck build. Both scopes wrapped up in just 4 days. That kind of turnaround matters when you've got a crew coordinating around other trades and a homeowner who wants their yard back.
Out front, we tore out the old driveway and poured a fresh slab with a broom finish, saw cuts, and sealer. The broom texture isn't just for looks - it gives you grip underfoot and holds up better over time than a smooth finish. The saw cuts control where the concrete wants to crack, so instead of random fractures showing up in a few years, you get clean, intentional lines that are part of the design.
Out back, we formed and poured the patio slab to work with the new deck above it. The form work included a curved edge on one side, which takes more time to set up but gives the finished space a much cleaner, custom feel. Same finish treatment as the driveway - broom texture, saw cuts, and sealer to protect it from the elements and keep it looking good season after season.
Sealing is a step that's easy to skip but makes a real difference. It locks out moisture, which is especially important in Minnesota where freeze-thaw cycles can do a number on unprotected concrete. It also makes the surface easier to clean and helps the slab hold its color longer. We don't treat it as an upsell - it's just part of doing the job right.
Whether you're replacing a worn-out driveway, adding a patio under a deck, or tackling both at once, the approach is the same. Good prep, proper forming, and the right finish work. That's what separates a slab that lasts from one that's already showing problems a couple years down the road.
